BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birmingham native Roy Wood Jr. will speak at the A.G. Gaston Conference on Feb. 18 at Red Mountain Theatre Company, discussing how self-investment in comedy evolved into a business and entertainment career (his talk emphasizes real-world entrepreneurship).  The Birmingham Times
  • Stephen Vlahos runs fast-growing wine company Gratsi from his Birmingham home — the firm, founded in Texas and selling 350,000 cases last year, plans to expand nationwide with Alabama in its future markets.  AL.com
  • Lockheed Martin announced on Thursday, Jan. 29 that it will quadruple production of THAAD interceptor missiles by increasing output from 96 to 400 units per year over the next seven years. The missiles are made in Troy and will boost local defense manufacturing.  Yellowhammer News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute has announced a new exhibition titled (The) Victors Write the Algorithm: Power, Propaganda, and the Making of American Memory that runs from Feb. 4 through Feb. 28, featuring archival materials and modern media to explore how narratives shape American and Black history.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham Museum of Art opened its new exhibit, Monet to Matisse: French Moderns, 1850–1950 on Friday and will continue through May 24, showcasing 103 works that span styles from realism to surrealism (including expanded pieces from its own collection).  WBHM
  • Birmingham’s Coca-Cola Amphitheater (on the former Carraway Hospital campus in Druid Hills) was nominated for New Concert Venue of the Year by Pollstar after hosting top acts in its debut season; voting ends Friday, Feb. 6.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuggle Elementary School in Birmingham improved its state grade from 76 to 80 — its first B grade — after using targeted reading and math sessions, and school leaders urge more students to sign up for intercession on Feb. 23-27 to boost learning.  WVTM 13
  • Momentum Leaders is hosting Rise 2026 on Tuesday, March 3 at 8:30 a.m. at the BJCC East Hall, where 1,200 local professionals can join 18 breakout sessions to improve leadership skills like communication + career growth.   • Birmingham City Schools has nearly all its campuses off the failing list after a three-year turnaround that raised test scores and cut chronic absenteeism. Hayes K-8 remains the last school on the list but is expected to improve next year (absenteeism is falling).  6 WBRC News

  • City leaders approved $160,000 for Create Birmingham, a group that helps film and TV productions set up projects in the city. The funds will support free workshops and marketing efforts to help local filmmakers + boost the local economy.  ABC 33/40

  • Researchers at UAB discovered that stress hormones trigger RNA switches which silence over 3,000 genes vital for brain communication. The study may lead to targeted treatments for depression and other mental health challenges in the future.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
