BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Business Council of Alabama named Madeline Roth Green as its new Director of Events and Development to lead event strategy and support partner relationships. She joined on Jan. 12 — after a career at the Economic Development Partnership and Alabama Association of Realtors.  Yellowhammer News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Four local chefs and one restaurant were named semifinalists for the 2026 James Beard Awards, with winners to be announced on March 31 and honored on June 15 (at the Lyric Opera in Chicago). Birmingham’s culinary scene gains national recognition through this honor.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity visited two Birmingham schools (including Oxmoor Valley Elementary) on National Day of Reading yesterday to inspire literacy and personal growth. The group will return next year to further support reading education in the community.  WVTM 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm will bring rain to north and central Alabama and minor ice impacts to northern counties, while cold air sets in on Monday. In Birmingham, temperatures will fall into the single digits — drivers should exercise caution on potentially slick roads.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama House passed HB138 on Thursday to ease school bus driver shortages by allowing retirees to drive full-time while still receiving benefits. The bill now moves to the Senate and includes a sunset provision ending Dec. 31, 2030.  Yellowhammer News
  • Hoover Mayor Nick Derzis said he will work to revive Riverchase Galleria and Patton Creek Shopping Center after visitor numbers and sales tax revenue dropped. He said discussions with developers (and owners) will start soon to restore the area’s appeal as the mall has cost the city millions.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • State lawmakers and local leaders hosted a maternal health forum at Birmingham City Hall on Friday, Jan. 23 to address disparities Black women face in accessing care during and after pregnancy. The forum offered solutions to boost health equity and improve access in rural areas.  WVTM 13
  • Daniel Listi, president of Baptist Health Princeton Hospital, will lead the Birmingham Heart Walk on March 14 at Railroad Park as he honors the 20 extra years gained with his late father; the free event will raise funds for heart research in Alabama.  Bham Now

  • Valentine’s Day is near and 19 Birmingham restaurants offer special dinners for couples. Spots like Hot and Hot Fish Club (with Southern seafood) and Helen invite diners to reserve a table early.  Bham Now
