BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hoover's StarDome comedy club owner Bruce Ayers announced his retirement after 42 years in business. The family-owned venue (opened in 1984) hosted top comedians and now awaits a new owner to honor its legacy.  1819 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham will honor Dr. King's legacy with several MLK Day events including a fellowship breakfast in Irondale on Jan. 15, a Drum Run on Jan. 16, and community service on Jan. 19 — each offering a chance for residents to reflect, celebrate and connect.  Bham Now
  • Claudette Colvin, a civil rights pioneer known for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus at age 15, died Tuesday at 86 in Texas as confirmed by her legacy foundation—local groups honored her historic impact on ending segregation.  WVTM 13
  • On Monday, Jan. 19, grocery + drug stores, restaurants and retailers will be open while banks, schools and federal agencies close for MLK Day; the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute hosts a free festival from 10AM to 5PM with music, workshops and discussions to honor Dr. King.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB will host its 2026 Jazz Summit on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Hulsey Center for the Arts and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, where students in grades 8-12 will join master classes, clinics with Don Was and his band, jam sessions, and a later 7:30 p.m. performance.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham and the Jimmie Hale Mission are opening warming stations today at 6 p.m. at 3420 2nd Ave. North and for women and children at 409 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd tomorrow - a free shuttle from Linn Park will help those in need.  ABC 33/40
  • The Birmingham housing authority was awarded a $500k grant to support local housing programs. Officials say the funds will be used to improve affordable housing and community services in the coming weeks.  6 WBRC News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • New nail salons have opened in Birmingham and Hoover as Le Esthetique prepares for its grand opening on Friday, Jan. 16 at Knox Square in Hoover while Nail Lab + Bar has reopened under new management on Montgomery Hwy offering manicures, pedicures and waxing services.  Bham Now
  • Local BBQ spot SAW's Juke Joint (in Crestline) has been named one of the top 20 best spots for chicken wings in the South by Southern Living. Food expert Matt Moore praised its signature Alabama white sauce and perfect smoking method after tasting its wings.  Bham Now

  • MBA Engineers will renovate the Wood Wade Building in Parkside into its new headquarters with over 11,000 sqft for offices and 8,000 sqft for retail (using an $11 million New Markets Tax Credit). The project, at 1st Ave S and 14th St S, will boost local growth.  Bham Now
