COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hub in the Hills, a nonprofit hub at the former Vestavia Hills Elementary Central, will open this spring. Construction has begun with parking ready by February and $4.5M raised; three local groups—Alabama Game Changers, Redemption Hill Church, and Unless U—will share the 7,400 sqft campus.  Bham Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Balance Wine (a new subscription service by Jono Mason) ramped up after its soft opening Dec. 3 in Pepper Place. The business offers monthly, curated wine selections and a concierge service with in-store pickup and may expand to delivery later.  Bham Now
  • Winn-Dixie said its two Birmingham stores (500 Inverness Corners and 4476 Montevallo Road) will close in late March. The supermarket chain is also closing five more Alabama locations early this year to focus on its Florida and Georgia markets.  Bham Now
  • Local roasters Bert Davis and Peter Solis will open Daysol Coffee, a new cafe, gallery, and venue at the former Ghost Train and Uproot Brewing site (2616 3rd Ave S) on January 17.  Bham Now
  • In a statement Friday, Winn-Dixie said eight Alabama stores will close in the next three months as it pulls out of the state. The closures will occur in late January (Fairhope and Mobile), early February (Millbrook, Opelika, and Tuscaloosa) and late March (Birmingham), following the company’s recent rebranding.  AL.com
  • The locally-owned brewery in downtown Trussville announced that its taproom will close on Saturday, Jan. 24, with limited hours this week so fans can stop by one last time as their beers continue via contract brewing.  Bham Now

  • Bessemer native Dargan Ware, a consumer protection lawyer and author, won two Jeopardy! games in September 2025 and earned $47,801 after nearly 30 years of persistence, drawing support from friends at Cahaba Brewing+ inspiring locals with his hard-earned trivia skills.  Bham Now

  • Representatives for Alabama’s new foreign business development office in Seoul visited earlier this month and toured key sites in Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, and Chambers County (reviewing economic assets) to explore additional Korean investment.  Yellowhammer News

  • Middle school students from the Alabama School of Fine Arts earned a $1,000 Promising STEM Innovation Award for an AI project that studies cancer treatment effectiveness, completed with Birmingham-based CerFlux. Their work shows how real-world research can begin early.  Yellowhammer News

  • Heavy rain and flash flooding affected Birmingham today, leading officials to advise residents to avoid low-lying areas. Emergency crews remain on alert & continue to monitor weather conditions.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB is planning to expand pre-hospital blood transfusions with a new grant from NHTSA that will cover eight counties to improve treatment for car crash victims. Dr. Mohammad Zain Hashmi explained that every minute without a transfusion increases the risk of death, especially in rural areas.  6 WBRC News
